Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussien has reminded the party's future generation of leaders on the importance of loyalty to its struggle.

"We can see among those who are not loyal to the struggle, they have drifted apart mid-way (in the journey).

"There is no place in Umno for those who are not loyal," he said in his speech to some 100 Umno Youth leaders and members at the launch of Umno Youth's Akademi Kepimpinan Kapten Hussein (AKHI) in Kelana Jaya here.

While Hishammuddin did not mention any names, Umno had recently sacked former Gopeng Wanita chief Hamidah Othman and considering disciplinary actions against nine other branch leaders who had called for party president Najib Abdul Razak's resignation.

The one-year old training academy was named after Hishammuddin's father, former prime minister Hussein Onn ( photo ), the first Umno Youth chief.

"My father was the first youth chief, he was only 27. As a leader, he always emphasised on the need to work hard.

"When the people need us, when the nation need us, there should be no hesitation to put the party and its struggle first," he said.

Since the days of his father, the former Umno Youth chief noted how the movement and the party has overcome great conflicts and turmoils, adding he believes that the current generation is also on the right path towards ensuring that Umno will remain relevant for the people.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, meanwhile, described the Umno Youth movement as traditionally the "factory" which produces the party's top leaders.

"Our prime minister and our deputy prime minister are both former Umno Youth chiefs.

"Even Malaysia's 'No 1 prisoner' is also a former Umno Youth chief. That is a history that we cannot deny," he quipped, in a clear reference to de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim who is now doing time at Sungai Buloh prison.

Supreme council to decide on Muhyiddin

Speaking to reporters later, Hishammudin confirmed that the Umno supreme council will be meeting to decide on whether party deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin will be allowed to deliver his winding-up speech at the upcoming annual general assembly.

"Let the Umno supreme council meet and decide on the matter," he said on Muhyiddin's recent remark that he will be reduced to a 'stump' on stage if not allowed to address the delegates.

The supreme council is expected to meet next Wednesday and the AGM will be held from Dec 8 to Dec 12.
