A lawyer representing businessperson Abdul Salam Ahmad has sent a letter of demand to international broadcaster Al-Jazeera following its report on murdered Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibu.

The letter was dispatched as the report claimed he was the middle person between Sirul Azhar Umar, who was convicted of Altantuya's murder, and an important person.

Lawyer Akberdin Abdul Kader said he sent the letter yesterday to Al-Jazeera 's registered office in Petaling Jaya and to its global headquarters in Doha, Qatar.

Salam, 51, seeks an apology within 14 days from Al-Jazeera failing which he said he would file a suit of RM50 million against the international news company.

He wants the apology to be published in three major local newspapers here, further said his letter of demand from Messrs Akberdin & Co .

The report in question had been aired over Al-Jazeera 's '101 East Documentary' segment and had focussed on Altantuya's murder.

Report lodged

It had been reported that on Nov 25, Salam lodged a police report against Al Jazeera following the report by Mary Ann Jolley.

In the seven-page letter, by the law firm, the businessman complained the airing of the documentary was defamatory to him as it meant that he was the go-between, the middleman or a fixer, that he was involved with corruption, gratification or bribery, that he was dishonest, untrustworthy, or lacked integrity.

It also meant that he was devious and a manipulative person. Salam further claimed that his reputation and good name was smeared as a result of the report, and as such he suffered humiliation, ridicule and embarassment.

Besides asking for an apology, the letter of demand seeks the removal of the documentary from Facebook , twitter , Instagram , YouTube , and from the Aljazeera.com 101 East programme.

Sirul, who is the second accused, is presently at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney, Australia,

He and Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri who were part of the elite Special Action Unit of the police, were found guilty of murdering Altantuya by the Federal Court on Jan 10.
