PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said his party is open to any intention to promote unity based on Islam with any quarters.

His statement comes within hours after Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he prayed for cooperation with PAS.

However, Abdul Hadi kept his statement general, stating that PAS would be responsive to any "positive voices" that favoured Islam, the country, and the rakyat, adding that this applied to both Muslims and non-Muslims.

"PAS' political moves are evaluated, discussed, and decided at every level of the party - including at the PAS central committee - until a collective decision is arrived at, based on these principles," he said in a statement tonight.

Abdul Hadi did not offer any more hints on how PAS will respond to Umno's overtures beyond the general statement, but went on to urge Umno to "return to the path of Islam".

"PAS would like to call on Umno that now is the best time for Umno to return to Islam by practising the Islamic way of life in all areas of its struggles, be it political, social, or economic," he said.

He added that the "door to repentance" is never closed and remorsefulness is the key to getting Allah's forgiveness.

Abdul Hadi concluded his statement by reiterating that PAS' cooperation with PKR remains intact.
