Shafie: Najib is like a brother to me

Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal today denied that he is squabbling with party president Najib Abdul Razak.

"We are not fighting. Who said we are fighting?

"Najib is my friend […] he is like a brother to me," Shafie told reporters at the media centre of the ongoing Umno general assembly at the PWTC in Kuala Lumpur today.

As such, he said there was no need for him to apologise.

"Some people asked us (Muhyiddin Yassin and me) to apologise. Come on, is there a need for me to apologise?

"What wrong have I done by just giving my opinion?" he pointed out.

Shafie was removed as minister from the cabinet in July, together with then deputy prime minister Muhyiddin for criticising Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's handling of 1MDB.

Both have been sidelined in the party and barred from speaking at this year's annual general assembly.

However, Shafie appears to be putting all that aside for now and said that there were bigger issues to tackle.

"It is more important to resolve the problems, resolve the problem of 1MDB, resolve the problems of bread and butter, the issues of the livelihoods of the people and resolve issues of confidence around the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

"These are issues that were not raised by us," he noted.
