Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein today denied asking two senior Umno leaders critical of party president Najib Abdul Razak to apologise.
The two leaders were Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal.
To confirm his assertion, Hishammudin uploaded onto his Facebook page a video recording of the press conference where he had purportedly asked the duo to apologise
The video was captioned: 'Hisham is defamed again: efforts to sow hatred against the Umno vice-president'.
"This is a video clip from my press conference yesterday. I never mentioned about Muhyiddin and Shafie having to apologise to Najib and Umno.
"The media should not spin and report at their whim. Abide by ethics," he said.
Checks revealed that the claim that Hishammuddin asked Muhyiddin and Shafie to apologise was reported by national news agency
Bernama
and subsequently sent out to other media.
Bernama had headlined it: 'There is still room for Muhyiddin, Shafie to apologise'.
According to the video uploaded by Hishammuddin, he was asked whether there was still room for forgiveness.
Hishammuddin then said that he was open about it but it was up to the individuals involved.
He did not specifically mention any apology.
Earlier today, Muhyiddin insisted he had not done anything wrong and stressed he will not apologise to anyone.
Shafie also refused to apologise, describing Najib as someone who was ' like a brother '.
