About 396,000kg of recyclable waste was collected from residential and business premises since the waste separation at source programme was implemented on Sept 1, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister Halimah Mohamed Sadique said.

She said revenue from the sale of recycled waste in the first two months of its implementation was RM35,414.91.

The waste separation at source programme was enforced in Kuala Lumpur/Putrajaya, Pahang, Johor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Perlis and Kedah.

"Of the total amount, plastic materials formed the bulk of waste collected which amounted to 155,000kg.

"This shows that plastics are widely used in our society " she said when officially opening the 2015 National Recycling Day at Taman Tasik Permaisuri Cheras in Kuala Lumpur today.

Halimah said recyclable waste discarded at landfills each year was estimated at 2.3 million tonnes, which could fetch a revenue of RM900 million.
