Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar has vowed to defend BN's pledge not to increase the intercity toll rate.

He said Plus highway toll rates, proposed to be increased by five percent next year, is not finalised, thus there was no need to speculate on the matter.

"According to the agreement, Plus has the right to request government to adjust highway toll rate, but it's not finalised at Parliament and cabinet stage.

"I have spoken in Umno general assembly recently, that this is our pledge in the last election.

"Intercity toll rate cannot be increased, but to rather it should decrease in stages," he said in a press confrence after The Legends Vision programme in Kuala Lumpur today.

Yesterday, Bernama reported Plus is awaiting government's decision to increase toll rate by five percent starting January 2016.

Khairy, who is also Umno youth chief, said he will bring the matter to Parliament to prevent toll hikes.

"I and other friends will speak up in Parliament that the Plus highway toll rates should not be increased.

"Plus has just sent in its application. The government can reject, but might need to pay compensation."
