Thirty-six police personnel from the Malacca Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) will be provided with a ‘bodycam’ each when they go patrolling, beginning Jan 1, next year.

Malacca police chief Chuah Ghee Lye said, the usage of the device was to protect themselves when on duty, and at the same time to raise integrity, especially to the public.

Speaking to reporters after the Malacca police headquarters’ state monthly gathering, he said the bodycam could make visual and audio recording for eight hours, and equipped with 400 GB memory card.

“The recorded visual will be transferred to computer for record purposes or reference if we receive complaints about the officers,” he said.

In addition, he said the recorded video would also help police in court for the trial of criminals, if needed.

He hoped the bodycam would be extended for usage by the police traffic unit and mobile patrol unit in future, but this would depend on the allocations received.
