No official meeting has been convened between Umno and PAS even after Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak opened the door for the two parties to foster closer ties.

Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein, when asked, said: "So far, there is no official meeting being convened between the two (top) party leaders, but there is a possibility that other leaders have met."

However, the main focus right now was to strengthen internal unity in Umno, he told reporters after attending the Defence Ministry's Innovation Day 2015 at Wisma Pertahanan in Kuala Lumpur today.

"What's important for Umno is to take care of itself […] we have to ensure that U is strong […] that the leaders are united and the members are not fighting each other," said Hishammuddin, who is also defence minister.

He said the aspiration was in line with the aspiration of Umno delegates which was voiced out during the party's recent general assembly.

"We have to have a limit in politics and matters that touch on national security, Islam and the status of the Malays […] I think it is high time for us to set aside political considerations for the sake of (achieving) a bigger agenda," he said.

Hishammuddin said what happened in Umno was a process of constructive political maturity and it was up to everybody to accept it or not.
