The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will not approve or renew licences for stand-alone liquor shops, the Dewan Negara was told today.

Federal Territories Deputy Minister Loga Bala Mohan said it was part of a new effort undertaken by DBKL which had begun in the Brickfields area, and it would be extended to the whole of Kuala Lumpur later.

"We have found there are some shops (stand-alone) which are still refusing to stop selling liquor, and enforcement is being carried out in stages in the Brickfields area," he said in a question-and-answer session in Kuala Lumpur.

He was responding to a question from Senator Jaspal Singh, who wanted clarification on the types of liquor sale licences issued by DBKL and the policies, as well as the conditions for the renewal of these licences.

Loga Bala said shop owners holding retail shop licence were only allowed to sell liquor on their premises from 9am to 9pm, while owners of wholesale licences were allowed to sell in large quantities within the same time limit.

He said licence holders who failed to comply with the time limit or violate the terms of their licence would have them revoked, regardless of how long they had been holding it.

"DBKL has also set some conditions for the renewal of liquor sale licences such as filling an application form and appending a copy of the identification card, copy of a valid premises licence and a copy of the previous liquor (sales) licence," he added.
