State investment firm 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) has denied that it has formed an airline company.

The company’s denial comes in response to a “fake Wikipedia entry” and “fake information circulating on social media” in relation to the set-up of one “1MDB Airlines Berhad".

“We confirm that there is no such company owned or operated by 1MDB,” 1MDB said in a statement today.

The company pointed out how it had, in February 2015, stated that it will not enter into any new investment or new business and is focused solely on inplementing its rationalisation plan.

“We request members of the public to ignore this fake information and not to be influenced by any third party claiming to act on behalf of 1MDB in relation to this matter.”

The fake entry in question is still available for viewing and is being considered for deletion by Wikipedia.

The article, titled ‘1MDB Airlines’ states that 1MDB Airlines Bhd is owned by 1MDB and was launched on Nov 30, 2015 by the company’s board of directors.

“It plans to operate from its base in Kuala Lumpur International Airport starting Feb 1, 2016 to Paris, France.

“The airline plans to compete with flag carrier Malaysia Airlines as well as AirAsia,” the article says.
