Families of AirAsia crash victims hold one-year remembrance

QZ8501 Relatives of those on board an Air Asia flight that crashed without survivors last year held a memorial service today, Indonesian media reported.

Flight QZ8501 crashed into the Java Sea en route from East Java to Singapore on Dec 28, 2014, killing 162 passengers and crew.

The memorial service was held privately at the East Java police headquarters in Surabaya.

The event was attended by AirAsia chief executive officer Tony Fernandes, Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency chief Air Marshal Bambang Soelistyo, East Java police chief Inspector General Anton Setiadji and acting Surabaya mayor Nurwiyatno.

A year-long investigation into the crash by Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee revealed that a malfunctioning part, the actions of the crew and a failure to fix persistent rudder problems were among the factors that led to the crash.
