The Malaysian army headquarters today confirmed that a captain who is believed to have been washed away by floodwaters in the United States has been found dead, reports Bernama.

It said in a statement that the body of Capt Hasman Hussin, who was reported missing last Saturday in the floods in Pulaski County, Missouri, was found on Monday.

The body was found at 11am on Dec 28 (1am on Dec 29 in Malaysia) and had been taken to the Fort Leonard Wood Hospital, it said.

The statement said that the families of Hasman and his wife were informed of the find by a senior army officer who visited the respective homes in Masjid Tanah, Malacca, and Felda Palong, Negeri Sembilan, today.

The army was making arrangements to fly close relatives of Hasman to the US for identification of the body, it said.

"Arrangements are being made to bring back the remains as soon as possible with the cooperation of the Malaysian Embassy in the United States and the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur," the statement said.

Expressed condolences

It said the Malaysian Armed Forces expressed condolences to the family of the captain.

Hasman, who was attending a course at Fort Leonard Wood since Oct 1, was reported missing after the vehicle he was travelling in with four college mates was washed away by floodwaters in Missouri.

His college mates also died in the accident.

The US ambassador to Malaysia Joseph Y Yun also sent a message of condolence to the family and friends of the deceased serviceman.

"It is with deep sorrow and sadness that I learned of the recent tragedy in Missouri." said Yun in a statement on behalf of the US Embassy in Malaysia.

Hasman was enrolled in the Engineer Captain’s Career Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and was scheduled to graduate in April 2016.
