Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob has been urged to let the federal government deal with Kuantan's bauxite problem, after he himself failed to announce any measures by year-end.

Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh said this would be for the good of the people.

"I can see that he (Adnan) has great challenges which he has difficulty overcoming, and that is why he is not able to announce a date for a moratorium (on bauxite exports).

"That is why I am proposing that in order to solve the problem, all the responsibilities – to suspend and regulate bauxite mining, implement and enforce a moratorium, and rehabilitate Kuantan – be handed over to the federal government," Fuziah told Malaysiakini .

The federal government, she added, has the mandate to carry out action as all the agencies that would be involved are under federal control.

"If he cares for the people of Kuantan, he should do this," Fuziah said.

She said this after a meeting with Adnan at the Kuantan Urban Transformation Centre today.

Adnan had previously reported to have said that the Pahang government, together with the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, would make an announcement on bauxite mining by year-end.

In her meeting with Adnan today, Fuziah handed over a memorandum, together with photographic evidence of what she claimed to be bauxite-induced pollution in Kuantan.

One set of photos she shared was allegedly of bauxite pollution between Pantai Batu Hitam and Sungai Pengorak ( photo ), caused by run-off from bauxite stockpiles at the Kuantan port.

A second set of photos showed the alleged damming activities at Sungai Rong ( photo, below ). The dammed-up water, Fuziah claimed, was to be used to clean bauxite.

This, she said, posed a danger of contaminating the drinking water of those who lived in Bukit Sagu.

The Department of Environment (DOE) is already probing the cause of the pollution at Pantai Batu Hitam.
