A Penang DAP assemblyperson has threatened to sue an obscure website that he borrowed money from a loanshark or has defaulted in a loan payment of RM200,000.

Pengkalan Kota assemblyperson Lau Keng Ee also strongly denied receiving any form of bribe from anyone in lieu of obtaining a housing project for a businessman, as alleged in the website penangheadline.com .

Lau challenged the individuals behind the allegations to lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

He is giving the accusers 48 hours to retract their allegations or face legal action from him for defamation.

On Dec 28, at about 2.30pm, Lau said he received a telephone call from a stranger who said he represented someone named "Jackie".

"The man asked me to pay back a loan of RM200,000 I took from Jackie.

"I told him I have not taken such a loan, and ended the call. I was then on the way to the Penang airport," Lau said in a press conference today.

"During that time, my assistant Brandon sent me text messages to say that a man came asking for me at my service centre at McCallum Street.

"Brandon told him I was not at the office and he left. After that, I received several phone calls from the same number but I did not answer,” he added.

Police report lodged

However, on Dec 29, Lau said two men visited his service centre and told him they were representatives of Jackie and were there to pick up the RM200,000.

Lau said he told them he had never borrowed the amount from anyone at any time in his life.

But the two men followed him into his service centre that day, although he repeatedly told them he had never borrowed the money, Lau added.

Lau said when he went home after meeting the two men, they had asked his assistant about his service centre’s operating hours, saying they would be back every day until they received the alleged amount.

“At 2.40pm when I was at home, the two men were at my front gate. They knocked and shook my gate vigorously, and I fear for the safety of my family, my assistants at my service centre and for myself,” Lau lamented.

Lau said he then lodged a police report at the Northeast police headquarters along Jalan Pattani at 4.42pm that day.

'Criminal intimidation'

Accompanying Lau at the press conference was lawyer cum DAP Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer.

Rayer urged the police to investigate the incident as it smacks of “criminal intimidation”.

“If penangheadline.com does not remove or retract the report or show proof, we will write to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to find out who the webmaster is, after which, we will proceed with legal action,” Rayer said.
