Many now know that the late former PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s second eldest son has joined Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), but Kelantan PAS seems to be in the dark on the matter.

Kelantan PAS deputy commissioner (I) Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said he only came to know about it yesterday.

“I only knew about it from sources and news about it was only published yesterday,” he told Malaysiakini .

Asked whether he had confirmed the matter with another of Nik Aziz’s sons, PAS Youth chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Aziz, the Kelantan deputy menteri besar said he has yet to meet him.

“I have not met Nik Abduh. But let him solve this thing among his siblings,” Mohd Amar stressed.

Kelantan Amanah communications director Nordin Hussin – at a dinner in Petaling Jaya last night - announced that Nik Omar Nik Aziz ( photo ) was appointed as chairperson of Amanah’s Kelantan syariah panel.

When met to confirm the matter later however, Nordin denied his earlier announcement, stating that the media had misheard him.

However, the confusion with regards to the announcement was resolved when Malaysiakini contacted a senior leader in Kelantan Amanah.

The source confirmed that the former Kelantan menteri besar's son had indeed joined Amanah, though for the moment he is keeping a low profile and will refrain from attending any public events.

This, the party insider said, was to honour his family's request.

In a text message reply to Malaysiakini ’s query, Nik Omar explained his low-profile approach to his new role.

“I prefer to practice the principle of ummah waahidah (one community of Muslims) in the current situation, each of us bringing our own views yet celebrating each other,” he wrote.
