Ringgit drops to almost RM4.4 against US dollar

The ringgit closed lower against the US dollar today in line with Bursa Malaysia's performance, an analyst said.

At 5pm, the ringgit was at 4.3910/3960 versus the greenback at 4.3890/3960 yesterday.

Hong Leong Bank senior manager (bond and economic research) Choong Yin Pheng said the suspension in trading of China's equity market today has caused market players to become more risk-averse.

"The local unit also decreased in tandem with the decline in oil prices and investor worries over China's economy," she said.

Oil prices tumbled today to US$32.62 a barrel, the lowest in 11 years.

The ringgit ended higher against the Singapore dollar to 3.0552/0606 from yesterday's 3.0590/0645 and went up against the British pound to 6.4025/4107 from 6.4224/4335.

The ringgit weakened against the yen to 3.7342/7397 from 3.7019/7081 and vis-a-vis the euro, it fell to 4.7454/7521 from 4.7116/7200 previously.

The ringgit hit a record low at the height of the Asian financial crisis in January 1998 when it reached 4.8850.
