The Johor state government will launch a housing programme for those in the middle income group in an effort to ensure all sections of society own a home.

Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin said discussions would be held with Perbadanan Perumahan 1Malaysia (PR1MA) to meet this aspiration.

He said the programme for the middle income group would be launched in three months’ time following discussions with PR1MA.

"We will then also indicate, the number of units and where it would be built," he added.

Asked about the price of each unit of the houses to be built, Mohamed Khaled said he hoped it can be sold for less than RM300,000.

"The state government has all this time been focusing on affordable homes priced under RM150,000.

"(Now) the time has come for us to see to the housing needs of the middle income group," he added.

Mohamed Khaled said this after launching the Johor Affordable Homes Project and officiating the opening of the building for the Rumah Kelab Komuniti Taman Desaru Utama today.

Also present was Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman, who is also the Pengerang Member of Parliament, Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairperson Abdul Latif Bandi and state secretary Ismail Karim.
