Police are still waiting for official confirmation that the two suicide bombers who killed 30 people in separate attacks in Iraq and Syria were really Malaysian citizens.

Inspector-general of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said today that this was because the terrorists may have been using fake Malaysian identities.

"We'll wait for the official reports first. They were reported to be Malaysians but we are not certain yet. So we must wait for confirmation of the particulars of the duo alleged to be Malaysians before we comment."

"Someone may be using Malaysian identities […] let then confirm that they were really Malaysians," he said after opening the departmental monthly assembly at the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

Yesterday, the New Straits Times reported that two Malaysian blew themselves up killing about 30 others in separate suicide bombing incidents in Syria and Iraq last week.

According to the report, Mohd Amirul Ahmad Rahim, 26, from Terengganu, killed himself during a battle at the Islamic State stronghold in Raqqa, Syria on Dec 29.

The other was Mohamad Syazwan Mohd Salim, 31, who allegedly sneaked into an Iraqi police training centre at Camp Speicher, 600km north of Baghdad and exploded himself.

Khalid admitted that there had been Malaysian suicide bombers prior to this but it would nevertheless be better to await for official confirmation.
