A landslide in the Cameron Highlands region has claimed yet another life, this time a foreign worker who had arrived just two days ago.

The victim, a Bangladeshi farmhand, was killed in the landslide that buried his makeshift hut at Kampung Sungai Getan in Terisu near Cameron Highlands this morning.

According to the New Straits Times , the victim is a 38-year-old identified as Kassim Munshi.

He was reported to be staying alone in the plastic sheet hut near the vegetable farm where he worked, which he occupied since arrival.

The English daily said Cameron Highlands fire station head Muhamad Haziq Hazmi confirmed the matter, adding that firemen were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call from villagers at 8.25am.

"We managed to retrieve the victim's body, which was buried under 0.4 metres of earth, at 9.15am and handed it over to the police at the scene," he was reported as saying.

Muhamad Haziq believes the 20-metre landslide may have occurred a few hours earlier, prior to the villagers realising it.

Cameron Highlands was hit by a deadly mudslide last year, which killed five people, including a 13-year-old student.

The tragedy triggered a protracted blame game in which Cameron Highlands MP G Palanivel was eventually targeted.
