Singapore’s 13th parliament opened today starting with the re-election of Speaker Halimah Yacob, followed by the oath-taking of 89 members of parliament (MPs) and two non-constituency MPs (NCMPs).
Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam is expected to address the city-state’s parliament tonight.
The 13th parliament convenes its first session after a successful general election (GE) in September 2015.
Out of 89 seats, the People’s Action Party contested all and won 83, with the other six seats won by The Workers’ Party of Singapore.
The first session of the first parliament of independent Singapore was held on Dec 8, 1965, four months after Singapore separated from Malaysia.
