The move by a secondary school in Penang to charge its students 30 sen each for use of its toilets has come under the radar of Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid.

"It is under the attention of the Penang Education Department for further action," Mahdzir said in a Facebook posting.

The unusual school policy at SMK (P) St George was first highlighted in the Penang Kini Facebook page, following complaints from parents.

However, a teacher at the school defended the move to charge students to use the school's toilet.

The teacher, Razuan Ibrahim, said there was a choice of free and paid toilets.

"Students have a choice. If they want to use a cleaner toilet, then please pay. If not, then use the free toilet," he said in a series of Facebook comments.

Razuan said this was a last solution as the attitude of some of the students in using toilets could not be changed.

He added that the charge imposed was a measure to help educate students to be responsible for the toilets they use.

"The paid toilet is nicer and cleaner. Even teachers must pay if they want to use it," he said.

However, Razuan said the policy had since been cancelled following instructions from the Penang Education Department, which disapproved of the move.
