The Immigration Department is tightening security surveillance at the country’s entry points to ensure every individual who enters is a genuine visitor.

Its director-general Mustafa Ibrahim said it was being conducted following the bombing incident in Jakarta, Indonesia on Jan 14 and the arrests of individuals in connection with terrorist threats by the police.

“In addition, the normal inspection procedure and biometric data taking is also being done. The immigration official has the right to conduct a more thorough inspection if the individual is seen to be suspicious.

“Doubtful individuals will face the Not To Land notice (NTL) under Section 8 of the Immigration Act 1959/63 or detain for further investigestion,” he said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said 68,363 individuals had been imposed with the NTL throughout last year.

Mustafa asked the public to give good cooperation while the inspection was being carried out and not make it an issue when they had to wait in a long queue.

He said over 124 million inspections involving entry and exit movements were recorded in 2015.

“We will not compromise with any individuals who potentially pose a threat to national security,” he said.
