RM2.6b – Bersih pledges full support for MACC
Pro-electoral reform group Bersih 2.0 said that it stands with the MACC in the "fight for justice and truth" to unravel the RM2.6 billion donation affair involving Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
"MACC is a shining example of an independent public institution which upholds integrity and justice. This is something which must be emulated by all institutions in order to restore the confidence and support of the public (in them)," Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah said today.
The NGO said that it fully supported the decision by the MACC to bring the matter of its investigations into the RM2.6 billion donation to its operational review panel to be re-evaluated.
The MACC said it had decided on this as attorney-general Mohamad Apandi Ali had decided to declare the case as closed.
Bersih expressed its confidence in the graftbuster and called on it to make public the details of its investigations to help to ensure that public confidence in the graftbuster's transparency and commitment is restored.
The NGO added that doing the right thing now may help Malaysia improve its plummeting standing in corruption perception index, and restore public confidence in the institutions of governance.
"An opportunity like this only comes along once. Do it now before it is too late," said Bersih.
Apandi had yesterday cleared Najib of any wrongdoing in relation to the RM2.6 billion donation deposited into his personal accounts.
