Tabung Haji to answer on financial position, dividend next week

Lembaga Tabung Haji will hold a media conference next week to answer all the accusations on its financial position as well as payment of dividend to depositors, said its chairperson Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim.

"The dividend payment will be announced before the Chinese New Year, God willing, next week," he said to reporters after attending the Umno supreme council meeting in Kuala Lumpur, today.

Abdul Azeez also refuted allegations that there were other financial institutions that deposited funds in Tabung Haji, as only Malaysian citizens who are Muslims would be eligible to deposit their money in the Pilgrims Fund.

On the letters from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) on Tabung Haji's financial position last year, Abdul Azeez said the government-linked fund had made a police report against the party who leaked the letter that went viral online without permission.

"Only myself and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom, received the letter.

"So we will see the outcome of the police investigation as to who leaked the letter," he added.

Earlier, a news portal reported that BNM governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz sent a letter to Tabung Haji warning the fund of its negative reserves, and that it was expected not to be able to pay any dividends to its 8.8 million depositors this year.

Abdul Azeez said BNM's action was not wrong and there should not be any issues on it.

He said the contents of the letter was more towards BNM giving a reminder to Tabung Haji, similar to that taken on other financial institutions under the central bank's supervision.

"She (Zeti) gave her views and advice to protect (our) profitability for the sake of the future. Not that Tabung Haji (is making) losses or losing money. Their action is not wrong.

"What is wrong is the mastermind who leaked the letter and spin (the facts). We will take action on this person, whoever that person may be," he stressed.
