Muhyiddin not a speaker at event, Subang Jaya club says
Sacked deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin was not officially invited to the sports event in Subang Jaya last weekend, and came to the event as a personal guest of an attendee, the Subang Jaya Community Sports Club said.
Club president Dr Mohd Nazir Abu Bakar said the administrators of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan USJ4, where the event was held, did not know Muhyiddin would attend.
“Thus, the statement that the school and the club were instructed to prohibit Muhyddin from making a speech, is highly inaccurate.
“Only our office-bearers were scheduled to give speeches for the launch. We believe that Muhyiddin may have been misinformed,” Mohd Nazir said in a statement.
Muhyiddin, in a Facebook posting, said he was informed the school administrators received instructions to not allow him to speak at the community sporting event.
The event was the launch of a football league for children aged 6-14. The league is managed by parents, who volunteer their services, and the matches are held at the school field.
“We remain as guests of the school, and are grateful to them for their hospitality. Our league, however, is run separately from the school, and does not form part of the school's activities,” Mohd Nazir said.
Sidelined in Umno as well
Muhyiddin was also education minister until the cabinet reshuffle in July, when he was dropped for his statements on scandal-plagued state investment firm 1MDB.
He remains Umno deputy president, but is also sidelined in the party, with his party duties taken over by vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Zahid also replaced Muhyiddin as deputy prime minister.
DAP's Subang Jaya assemblyperson Hannah Yeoh responded to Muhyiddin’s Facebook posting by saying: “Welcome to the club” .
Although an elected representative, Yeoh said she has never been allowed to enter school grounds, even for innocuous events such as anti-dengue campaigns.
The two-term assemblyperson and Selangor legislative assembly speaker said she has had to deliver contributions to schools outside the school compounds.
