Mukhriz to resign tomorrow?

Kedah is abuzz with a late night speculation that Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir is on his way out.

Berita Harian reported that Mukhriz will be holding a press conference at 10am on the decision of the Kedah palace on his status as menteri besar.

The Malay daily also said that the media has been alerted by the state secretariat to get ready for a press conference at a yet to be determined time.

Oriental Daily reported that Mukhriz has agreed to tender his resignation.

The developments come after the Kedah Regency Council met with all 21 BN assemblypersons and 15 opposition representatives over the past two days.

No longer support Mukhriz

The opposition has called for a vote of confidence in the state assembly to determine Mukhriz's fate.

However, a majority of the BN assemblypersons are believed to have told the regency council that they no longer support Mukhriz.

The move to oust Mukhriz was set in motion two weeks ago by Kedah Umno deputy chief Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah ( photo ).

Ahmad Bashah's faction claims Mukhriz has failed in his duties as menteri besar and has been busy drumming up support from BN state representatives to prove this claim.

However, Mukhriz turned to people power as his supporters organised several big rallies to showcase public support in his favour.

While the MB seems to be the target, some claim the move is actually an attack on the sitting menteri besar's father, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and that Mukhriz is merely "collateral damage".
