Adenan mulls allowing direct BN candidates in state polls

Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem today said he was mulling the possibility to field direct BN candidates in the upcoming 11th state election.

Adenan, who is also Sarawak BN chairperson, however, did not disclose the actual number of direct BN candidates to be fielded.

"The matter is being considered to solve the dispute over seat allocation along component parties," he told reporters after officiating the closing of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth election machinery preparation seminar in Santubong today.

He said the direct-BN-candidate formula was used in the previous election involving James Dawos Mamit for Mambong seat and Billy Abit Joo for Ulu Rajang seat.

However, Adenan said he had yet to set the date to ask the consent of the Yang Dipertua Negeri Abdul Taib Mahmud to dissolve the state assembly.

On the seat allocation, the chief minister said the number of seats to be contested for PBB and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) had been finalised at 40 and 11, respectively.

The number of seats to be contested by other BN component parties, however, would be finalised soon.
