'No pork' signs at eateries for other religions, says minister

The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry will give detailed explanation on the definition of the 'pork-free' signage and logos commonly found at eateries, its minister Hamzah Zainuddin said.

He said the 'pork-free' or 'no pork, no lard' signage or logos implied that the food offered by the eateries were halal and if left unexplained, could cause disharmony among the multi-racial and multi-religious people in the country.

"I have instructed our officers to check and to ensure that there were no tricks being played by the owners of the eateries in their bid to lure customers.

"Muslim consumers are advised not to eat at such premises because the 'pork-free' signage is probably displayed for devotees of other religion who do not eat pork."

He said this to reporters after presenting letters of appointment to 54 village heads in Larut parliamentary constituency today.

Commenting further, Hamzah said stern action would be taken against any eateries displaying the halal logo but were selling non-halal food.
