The Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) today advised owners of premises selling seafood and seafood products to seek halal certification, following growing public awareness of halal issue.

Its enforcement division chief Alidin Ali Hassan said to obtain the halal certification, the owners need to file an application at JHEAINS Office at a fee of RM200.

“The process of inspection and issuance of the halal certificate will take about 30 to 45 days.

“So far, JHEAINS halal certification had been issued to 511 products, 71 slaughterhouses, 14 logistics, and 278 food premises," he said at the consumer protection task force meeting chaired by state community development and consumer affairs minister Jainab Ahmad Ayid in Kota Kinabalu today.

Also present were representatives of Domestic Trade, Cooperative, and Consumerism; Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim); Information Department; and the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission.
