A grouping of disgruntled Umno branch leaders have thrown their support behind the March 27 rally to call for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's ouster which was first proposed by former law minister Zaid Ibrahim.

"We will be there with them," said Gabungan Ketua Cawangan Umno Malaysia (GKCM) president Kamarulazman Habibur Rahman.

However, Habibur said he is uncertain if Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin, who has been sidelined by Najib, will be joining the rally.

"That has yet to be discussed but I don't think so.

"It all depends on the situation and objective of the programme," he told Malaysiakini .

Zaid has called for a bi-partisan rally for Najib's ouster amid his scandals.

Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been at the forefront of the movement to remove Najib from office, accusing him of corruption. Najib denied any wrongdoing.

The opposition have been weary about endorsing the rally, fearing that Mahathir only wants to remove Najib and is not interested in system change .

Last week, PAS' Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar, after meeting with Mahathir, revealed that the statesman is now in favour of working with the opposition to oust Najib.

However, Mahfuz said the former premier prefers that the issue of succession to only be decided after Najib's removal.
