PAS MP: Technocracy proposal should start in Kelantan

PAS’ Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar has sarcastically proposed that Kelantan lead the way by forming a technocracy after party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man urged the formation of a new political coalition that will allow technocrats to lead the country.

Mahfuz also took a subtle jibe at the PAS leadership which is now dominated by religious conservative after they purged professionals from the party last year.

“A technocracy is a very practical proposal in overcoming the weaknesses and failures of political players who do not have the background to manage the country and states.

“This idea shows that the government leadership cannot comprise of those who only have a single discipline of knowledge as their background including Islamic studies.

“It shows the trust and respect PAS has for technocratic professionals. Managing the country and and states these days is complex and require planning expertise in an increasing challenging economy,” Mahfuz said in a statement today.

Mahfuz said a technocracy will never be implemented by the BN government as it views government positions as a gold mine to fight over.

As such, he said PAS-held Kelantan should lead the way by amending the state’s constitution so that the state’s menteri besar and executive councillors can be appointed from among individuals not in the state assembly but are qualified to manage the government.

“The good proposal by Hadi should not be left alone without any initiatives to present a practical example that can convince the rakyat of this new idea of new and mature politics.

“If there are no efforts for Kelantan to take this up, it will only be seen as lip service,” he said.

Yesterday, Tuan Ibrahim proposed the setting up of a technocracy as a solution to the leadership crisis in the ruling coalition.
