Inspector-general of Police Khalid Abu Bakar will meet with Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor to discuss the latter’s proposal to allow motorcycle street-racing by amateurs in Kuala Lumpur.

“I believe he can justify this. I want to meet with him and discuss it first,” The IGP told reporters at the Bukit Aman police headquarters.

Khalid said that Tengku Adnan had probably proposed the idea because the problem of youths being involved in illegal motorcycle racing seemed to be getting out of hand.

"I shall meet with him to hear his views, maybe (he sees) the Mat Rempit problem as having no end in sight. Despite various actions by authorities, youths still race late into the night," he said.

Tengku Adnan on Monday proposed to close off several roads in the capital once or twice a week for youth to race their motorcycles.

The minister and Umno secretary-general said he would propose this to the Kuala Lumpur mayor with the help of 'Umno friends'.

Tengku Adnan citied the ‘KL Car Free Day’ model for which some roads in the city centre are closed for several hours one Sunday a month for the exclusive use of cyclists and pedestrians.

Kuala Lumpur roads have long been the venue for illegal street races by young motorcyclists colloquially dubbed as ‘Mat Rempit’.
