The Petaling Jaya Sessions Court has fixed April 11 for the outcome of a letter of representation sent by lawyers representing the 79 activists who were charged for illegal assembly in an anti-Goods and Services Tax rally at the Customs and Excise Department in Kelana Jaya last year.

The letter of representation, sent to the Attorney-General's Chambers, asked that the charges they are facing be reduced or dropped.

Two federal lawmakers - Sungai Siput MP Dr D Jeyakumar and Kuala Krai MP Dr Mohd Hatta Ramli - are among the 79 charged with illegal assembly at the Customs Department headquarters in Kelana Jaya on March 25, last year.

They were there to find answers to 106 questions they had on the GST before its implemention on April 1 last year but many ended up arrested by the police.

Sessions judge Azhaniz Teh Azman Teh announced the date in open court, after meeting with the defence lawyers and prosecutors in chambers.

Should the letter of representation fail, Azhaniz has fixed May 9 for the start of trial.

The activists are represented by eight lawyers. Among them are Roger Tan, M Visvanathan, Ariff Zulfahmi and Joanne Chua.
