DAP chairperson Karpal Singh was involved in a road accident in Penang last night while on his way home from the city airport.

He sustained neck and back injuries and was warded at the Gleneagles Medical Centre in Penang. His condition was reported to be stable.

Karpal who is Bukit Gelugur MP was travelling in a taxi from the airport to return home at about 12 midnight when it was hit by a car at a junction near his residence.

Penang DAP chairperson Chow Kon Yeow said Karpal was admitted to the Gleneagles Medical Centre soon after the mishap. He was warded in the intensive care unit after scanning.

Stable today

"His neck and back injuries are quite bad," said Chow who visited Karpal in the hospital last night.

He revealed that the taxi driver was discharged after receiving outpatient treatment.

Meanwhile, Karpal's son Gobind Singh told malaysiakini this morning that his father's condition was stable.

Many DAP leaders and members were at the hospital to visit their chairperson today.

Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang, who was also present at the medical centre today, was quoted by Bernama as telling party members that they should not be unduly alarmed about the matter as Karpal was in the good hands of medical doctors.

He asked DAP supporters and Malaysians in general to pray for Karpal's good health.
