About 100 villagers gathered at Kampung Permatang Tok Subuh today to defend the demolition of their homes following a bailiff's notice of vacant possession which expired today.

Accompanying the villagers were political parties and NGO activists, with some coming from Kuala Lumpur, to camp inside the village as a show of solidarity.

At 10am, the protesters launched a two-hour event themed 'Pesta Perjuangan' which was held on a makeshift stage.

They gave speeches, sang songs, and recited poems to boost the morale of the villagers and pressure the landowner into providing them with proper compensation.

So far, there was no sign of the bailiff, representatives of the landowner, or bulldozers.

Other than Saving Kampung Permatang Tok Subuh action committee president Hamidah Che Embi, those who delivered speeches included Deputy Chief Minister I Rashid Hasnoor, parliamentarians Mansor Othman (Nibong Tebal), Steven Sim (Bukit Mertajam), Machang Bubuk assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon, PSM Youth central committee member Nik Aziz Afiq Abdul, Jerit representative Choo Chon Kai, and Serikat Mahasiswa USM spokesperson Jefry Musa.

"We are just seeking for a reasonable amount of compensation from the landowner; until then we shall not move out," said Hamidah.

"Just give either a house for a house or RM42,000 per household.

"Until then, we will take turns to defend our village from being seized by the bailiff," she warned.

Members of the 26 households in Kampung Permatang Tok Subuh in Penang, who have lived here since the 70s, are facing eviction after losing their appeal in court, after which they received a notice to vacate the land by today.

The villagers decided to defend their homeland unless the landowner agree to compensate them with RM42,000 or provide a replacement house for each household.

They have rejected the landowner's offer of RM15,000 to RM35,000 per household.

The 5.03 acres of land near Bukit Minyak's small and medium scale industrial zone, now belongs to Distinct Class Sdn Bhd, after a few changes of land ownership.

The land was initially occupied by 50 households but half of them have moved out after accepting a RM10,000 compensation offered by the landowner.
