A motion to sack suspended Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir will be proposed at the next Umno supreme council meeting expected at the end of this month.

It's regarding their support for the Citizens' Declaration to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

The motion would be proposed by Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi.

Contacted for confirmation on his statement as reported by The Star today, Puad in a text message to Malaysiakini said, “yes”.

Puad, who is also department of special affairs director-general, had reportedly said he would propose the motion as the duo’s endorsement of the 37-paragraph declaration was a move that “could not be forgiven”.

“Their decision to bersekongkol (conspire) with DAP was done deliberately. It is a betrayal against what Umno has been fighting all this while, which is to reject DAP’s agenda,” he was quoted as saying.

Umno supreme council member Abdul Aziz Kaprawi, meanwhile, told Malaysiakini that both Muhyiddin and Mukhriz clearly breached the party’s constitution.

“Swift action must be taken against Muhyiddin and others as it now seems like they can do whatever they want with no regard for the party’s ethics or constitution.

“The action (against them) must also be taken in order to protect the party’s sovereignty. No individual can be above the rules set out by the party’s constitution,” said the Sri Gading MP.

'Imminent destruction'

Echoing the call for action to be taken against errant party leaders, Selangor BN secretary Johan Abdul Aziz told Malaysiakini that failure to do so could spell the imminent destruction of Umno.

“It is best that action is taken against them because their move (against Najib) can destroy the party.

“The disciplinary committee will know whether to sack or suspend them. But take action against Muhyiddin and Mukhriz,” said the Semenyih state assemblyperson.

The Citizens' Declaration was originally drafted by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad to rally a movement calling for Najib’s resignation as prime minister.

The final 37-paragraph document signed by 58 individuals last Friday, however, also incorporated proposals for long-term institutional reforms - based on input from signatories that included civil society and Pakatan Harapan leaders.

Aside from Muhyiddin and Mukhriz, signatories from BN include Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal, Umno veteran Sanusi Junid and former MCA president Ling Liong Sik.
