An Umno supreme council member has agreed that former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad should be stripped of all positions that entitled him to receive benefits and allowances from the government.

Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Aziz Kaprawi told Malaysiakini that the move should be taken following Mahathir’s latest attempt at ousting Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak through rallying the Citizens' Declaration movement last Friday.

“Tun M (Mahathir) has crossed the ‘red line’ when he joined forces with the opposition.

“All of his appointments in government-linked entities such as Petronas, the Perdana Leadership Foundation and others, that entitled him to allowances and benefits, should be revoked,” the Sri Gading MP said today.

Mahathir is currently the chairperson of Perdana Leadership Foundation and Proton Holdings Berhad, as well as adviser of Petronas.

The Umno Bera division at a special meeting yesterday had also passed a motion to urge the government to strip Mahathir of the positions.

Bernama quoted Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri as condemning the movement to oust Najib.

"Bera Umno strongly condemns the attempt made by Mahathir and Lim Kit Siang (DAP adviser) alliance to illegally topple the prime minister," said Ismail who is Bera MP and Umno division chief.

After months of relentless attacks against Najib, Mahathir had last Friday led the list of signatories to the Citizens' Declaration , which he had personally drafted.

The final 37-paragraph document, however, also incorporated proposals on long-term institutional reforms - as proposed by the 57 other signatories including civil society and Pakatan Harapan leaders.
