S'wak CM: Cabal of misfits behind anti-Najib declaration
Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem has described the Citizens' Declaration initiated by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a futile exercise.
He said the declaration is the work of a "cabal of misfits" who used to be "great enemies" with each other.
"It will be an exercise in futility and I am surprised Mahathir has allowed himself to be used as a tool," he was quoted as saying by The Star .
He also noted how opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail claimed that the declaration was an indirect admission by Mahathir that her husband Anwar Ibrahim was a victim.
She had also said that freeing him would be Pakatan Harapan's main agenda.
Anwar, the former opposition leader, is serving a five-year prison term for a sodomy charge, which he claims was fabricated but the government denies this.
"Wan Azizah says they will use all that to free Anwar. I think it's very ironic," said Adenan, urging the people to be cautious of the opposition's "shenanigans".
Last Friday, Mahathir and 44 others inked the declaration calling for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's removal through lawful means and to reform key institutions and agencies.
Among those who endorsed the declaration were his political foes such as DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang and NGO leaders once critical of the former premier.
Even Anwar had backed the move despite his protracted feud with Mahathir, which stemmed from his sacking as deputy prime minister in 1998.
