Private investigator P Balasubramaniam's widow, A Santamil Selvi, is scheduled to hold a press conference tomorrow, in which she is expected to apologise to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

"PI Bala's wife will make an open apology to Najib and family, and denounce the opposition's false promises," read the press invite sent by pro-Najib NGO, Pertubuhan Minda Sosial dan Prihatin (PMSP), leader Ramesh Rao.

When contacted, Selvi's lawyer Americk Sidhu expressed surprise when hearing this.

He told Malaysiakini that the investigator's widow had been approached by certain quarters to hold a press conference in exchange for financial assistance.

"I got an SMS from her yesterday saying (they) offered to pay for her children's education and pay her RM50,000 as well," Americk said.

The lawyer believes the offer is related to Selvi's suit against controversial carpet businessman Deepak Jaikishian.

"They're concerned that Deepak will reveal everything he knows under cross-examination," Americk said.

Ramesh however denied that he had offered Selvi anything, though he indicated that she was going through financial troubles.

"You can ask her for details tomorrow," the NGO chief told Malaysiakini.

Efforts to contact Selvi have been unsuccessful.

The investigator's widow is suing Deepak for his role, with seven others, in sending her family into exile in India for five years from 2008 to 2013.

The seven others named are Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, his wife Rosmah Mansor, Najib's siblings Ahmad Johari and Nazim, senior lawyer Cecil Abraham, lawyer M Arulampalam and commissioner of oaths Zainal Abidin Muhayat.

The suit had initially been dismissed at the High Court, but the Court of Appeal ruled the case had merit, and ordered for a trial in the High Court.

The exile, Selvi claimed, was caused by Bala's first statutory declaration in which the late private investigator states that Najib knew the murdered Mongolian translator, Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Bala then retracted the first SD the very next day, signed a second one and he and his family disappeared after that.

Senior lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah has been roped in to represent Deepak in the case.
