Political cartoonist Zunar will be exhibiting his works at the new Asia Comic Cultural Museum in Penang tomorrow.

Zunar - whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque - will be the only Malaysian with “a big space” in the museum, said the cartoonist himself.

“I am honoured to be among the top international cartoonists who will be exhibiting in the museum, like Tony Wang and Ma Weng Seng,” Zunar told Malaysiakini .

“There will be 251 cartoonists and comic artists from nine countries participating in the museum,” he added.

The artists exhibiting in the museum come from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Korea.

Zunar’s programme kicks off tomorrow from 2pm to 5pm, where his fans can catch him “perform” his drawings on the country’s current political scenario.

Zunar has ruffled many feathers and was hauled up several times under the Sedition Act 1948, which was “strengthened and fortified” under Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s administration.

He currently faces nine charges under the Sedition Act for his alleged seditious tweets last April, following former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's conviction for Sodomy II last year.

Meanwhile, Asia Comic Cultural Museum curator Hew Kuan Yau noted that Zunar is the most popular and influential political cartoonist in Malaysia.

“He deserves a special zone in our museum, his artwork is a combination of 4E - education, entertainment, enrichment and empowerment,” Hew said.

Zunar received the prestigious ‘International Press Freedom Award 2015' from the Committee to Protect Journalists in New York in November last year, and has dedicated his award to all Malaysians pushing for reforms.

During the museum’s opening on March 8, Penang Youth Development Corporation chief executive officer Teng Kok Liang was quoted in Bernama as saying that the museum “serves to conserve and promote historical and cultural heritage.”

The museum was officially launched by state tourism and cultural development executive councillor Danny Law Heng Kiang.

Opened daily from 11am to 6pm, the museum will display comics from the pre-World War II years to the present, 3D cartoon illustrations and popular comic characters such as the Monkey King, Ultraman and the Masked Rider.
