Putrajaya will consider declassifying its agreement on the import of Bangladeshi workers once the deal is sealed, said Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

"The government is still discussing with the company to finalise the contract.

"The document's classification will be considered in line with the Official Secrets Act (OSA) (after the contract is finalised)," Zahid said in a written parliamentary reply today.

He was replying in his capacity as home minister to a question by Charles Santiago (DAP-Klang) on whether the government will declassify the agreement between Putrajaya, Dhaka, and Synerflux Sdn Bhd on the intake 1.5 million migrant Bangladeshi workers.

Synerflux is the company that won the government contract to provide an online system to manage the workers.

Zahid also clarified that the deal with Dhaka is on a government-to-government basis and did not involve any companies.

Speaking to the media, Charles questioned why the agreement was being held secret.

"Making a commercial agreement, and putting it under OSA clearly shows the government has something to hide," he said.

He asked the government to make public the details of its agreements with Dhaka and Synerflux.

The proposed import of Bangladeshi workers previously sparked controversy after reports claimed that the contract was to be awarded to Zahid’s brother, businessman Abdul Hakim.

The Home Ministry, however, denied this, and ended up awarding the contract to Synerflux instead.
