The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is looking into tightening regulations on online media, Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed said today.

He said the MCMC consulted the Home Ministry on the matter, although the issue falls outside of the ministry's jurisdiction.

"The Home Ministry controls the print media, so it sought our advice on how to control the online media," Nur Jazlan told reporters at the Parliament lobby.

Online content is regulated by the MCMC, which is under the jurisdiction of the Communications and Multimedia Ministry.

Nur Jazlan earlier told The Malay Mail Online that the government is looking at amending the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 to require news practitioners and bloggers to register with MCMC before they can operate.

The online media industry suffered a blow with the closure of news portal The Malaysian Insider .

The portal's owner said it was no longer commercially viable, with its financial woes mounting after the government blocked access to the website last month.
