Former Bernas senior officer claims trial to bribery

A former senior officer of Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas) pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court in Alor Setar today to six counts of accepting bribes totalling RM73,000 to obtain Super Tempatan 15 percent (ST15) rice quotas in 2013 and 2014 for a third party.

Hassin Mad Zin, 54, was allowed bail totalling RM22,500 by Judge Zanol Rashid Hussain who set April 26 for mention.

Hassin pleaded not guilty to accepting RM9,000 on Aug 6, 2014, from the owner of WH Awana Enterprise as an inducement to obtain 30 tonnes of ST15 rice for the company for July 2014 from the Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry.

Zanol Rashid allowed bail of RM7,500 in one surety and set April 26 for mention.

In the same court, Hassin pleaded not guilty to five counts of accepting a bribe of RM12,800 in September, October, November, December 2013 and January 2014 from the owner of Syarikat Berkat Zarul Enterprise as an inducement to obtain 40 tonnes of ST15 rice for the company in September, October and November and twice in December from the Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry.

Hassin was represented by counsel Mohamad Sofee Razali. DPP A Hafiizh Abu Bakar of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission appeared for the prosecution.
