'Zahid and Hisham should also apologise for Aminulrasyid shooting'

Inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar is not the only one who should apologise over the fatal police shooting of teenager Aminulrasyid Amzah, but the present and previous home ministers as well, said a DAP lawmaker.

DAP Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang was commenting on the IGP's continuing refusal to apologise to Aminulrasyid's family following last week's damning court ruling.

"It is sad that Khalid continues to defend the unjustified police shooting and killing of the 14-year-old Aminulrasyid in Shah Alam six years ago.

"It is a poor reflection on police professionalism of top police officers like Khalid and a slur on their duties [...]," Lim said in a statement today.

"It is not only Khalid, but Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former home minister Hishammuddin Hussein who should also tender apology," he added.

Last week, the court ruled in favour of Aminulrasyid's family in their civil suit against the police over the teen's death and noted public misfeasance on the IGP's part in relation to claims made over weapons found in the car.

However, Khalid yesterday remained adamant about calls to apologise to the family.

CM: Just apologise if professional

Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng also ticked off Khalid for refusing to apologise, saying it is the professional thing to do if the force, as Khalid claims, indeed is (professional).

"IGP Khalid can display police professionalism by admitting to mistakes made and apologising for the public misfeasance and wrongful killing of Aminulrasyid Amzah.

"His words that 'there is not one instance when we have not been professional', may yet return to haunt him in cases of police misconduct such as police custodial deaths or even police brutality," said Guan Eng in a separate statement.

"Even though a public apology will not bring back Aminulrasyid, the IGP will help to bring some sort of closure to the grief suffered by the family over these last six years," he added.
