PKR Youth today urged the authorities to abort all plans to investigate former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for sedition.T

This comes after Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed said Mahathir’s call to the royalty to look beyond the Federal Constitution to pressure Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak could be considered seditious and treasonous.

“One struggles to see how the nation’s security could be threatened by an annual meeting of a white-collared professional body, or for that matter, the words of a 90-year-old former statesman who has spent the better part of his life in its service,” PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said.

Nik Nazmi also expressed concern over news that lawyers are being summoned for an investigation into sedition on the motion against the attorney-general that was passed by the Bar Council at its annual general assembly recently.

“We believe that all right-thinking Malaysians share this sentiment and want no action to be taken, either against Dr Mahathir or the lawyers.

“Instead, with all the recent revelations against the prime minister, be it on 1MDB or the transfer of huge sums of money into his personal accounts, surely the authorities would have enough evidence to take legal action against Prime Minister Najib,” he said in a statement.

'Nation faces far more serious threats'

Nik Nazmi said there are far more serious threats faced by Malaysia, and security laws should not be used to settle political disputes.

Mahathir, after the People’s Congress on Sunday, told reporters that while the Federal Constitution does not allow the rulers to sack Najib, the rulers can still pressure the PM to resign.

He said the people must lobby the rulers to do so, by signing the Citizens’ Declaration, which among others calls for Najib’s resignation.

Mahathir said the Save Malaysia group would submit the petition to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong once they receive one million signatures.

The group will go on a nationwide roadshow to collect the signatures.
