PKR's Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar questioned today whether she would be judged fairly by Parliament's Rights and Privileges Committee on her meeting with the Sulu princess last November.

This is because, she said, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said, who mooted her referral, also sits in the committee which will decide her fate.

Nurul Izzah raised her objection to the committee, which is chaired by Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia, when she was summoned yesterday.

"That is one of the key objections I made," she told the media when met at the Parliament building.

"Azalina was the minister who raised the motion (against me) but she also sits in the committee. So tell me, how would I get justice from someone clearly prejudicial towards me?

"Maybe you can ask Azalina what is the worst she can do to Nurul Izzah?" she said.

“I am always innocent, there is nothing to defend except the truth,” she said, with a shrug.

“This is the system we have to live with, everyone knows their limitations, but I am a committed democrat, I respect the system enough to go through the process.

“So I will do my best to fight back to sufficiently defend myself but I believe we all have to be prepared as opposition MPs,” she said, adding that the worst scenario awaiting her was being suspended for one year.

Nurul Izzah also revealed that she would not call Princess Jacel Kiram as her witness.

“Please don’t get me into any more trouble by your questioning,” she said, adding that the suggestion brought up by some BN lawmakers was mala fide in nature.

According to her, Tian Chua (PKR-Batu) was also called to testify.

It was reported that on Dec 3 that the Dewan Rakyat approved a motion by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina that Nurul be referred to the committee.

This follows the PKR vice-president’s Manila meeting with Jacel Kiram, daughter of Jamalul Kiram II, the person responsible for the Sulu incursion in Lahad Datu.

The motion was approved with 105 supporting and 88 against after it was debated for more than an hour.

The two-term MP admitted meeting Jacel and apologised to the victims of the Lahad Datu incursion after a photo of her and Jacel was uploaded onto social media.

Nurul also said she is waiting for the committee to call her to testify and added “more episodes are coming”.
