Farmer Pawi Omar is beaming with pride that his son Khairul Idham clinched the Moto3 title at the Argentinian Moto GP on Sunday.

However, the 52-year-old father of four told Malaysiakini that he is far from delighted with the praises pouring in for his son from government leaders.

"The prime minister (Najib Abdul Razak) said congratulations, the youth and sports minister (Khary Jamaluddin) said congratulations too. But that's all we got, congratulations.

"This is despite my numerous requests (for aid) especially from the Youth and Sports Ministry," he lamented.

"I'm very disappointed. If the government cannot help then I will have to pawn off the things we have.

"I've sold my land and cows because I had a deal with Khairul Idham. I promised him that if he worked hard to prove he can succeed, then I will work hard to find the money," he said.

Pawi disclosed that Honda Malaysia has offered the motorcycle racer a sponsorship.

"But my son hasn't signed the contract to accept the sponsorship deal, I told him it's fine, you don't have to think about it yet.

"I told him to think about how to win each championship, and prove his worth. God willing he'll get his dues.

"But I'm thankful for Honda's commitment to give him a chance, and provide engineers and expertise for Khairul Idham," he said.

Yesterday, Khairy asked for the private sector to come forward and sponsor motor sports, and place Malaysian talent on the world stage.

He said his ministry has also been working with the Sepang International Circuit Sdn Bhd (SIC) on a RM2 million motor sports development programme since last year.
