Opposition MPs marched from Parliament House to Bukit Aman police headquarters today to protest the arrest of Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli.

This despite inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar having issued a stern warning against the protest, and that action will be taken against those violating the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA).

At 9.10am, about fifty MPs from Pakatan Harapan and PAS, clad in suits, started the walk chanting, " Selamatkan Malaysia (Save Malaysia)", "Release Rafizi" and "Najib and IGP resign".

They also held another banner which read " Bebaskan Rafizi, hentikan pencabulan kedaulatan Parlimen (Free Rafizi, stop violating Parliament's sovereignty)".

Participants included PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, PKR Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul, Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh, DAP supremo and Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang, Seremban MP Anthony Loke, Parti Amanah Negara Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, Kuala Krai MP Hatta Ramli and PAS Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar.

Later, DAP secretary-general and Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng joined the demonstration.

Police were seen maintaining order and did not interrupt the walk.

After 20 minutes, they arrived at the front gate of the police headquarters and submitted a memorandum seeking the release of Rafizi.

A police officer accepted the memorandum, but rejected their request to meet with Khalid.

The police also told the lawmakers they were in violation of Section 9(1) of PAA and that action will be taken.

Shortly after that, the they dispersed and returned to the Parliament.

Khalid issued stern warning

Rafizi was arrested on Tuesday at the Parliament gate under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act (OSA) after revealing classified documents regarding the Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT).

He was remanded for three days and is currently held at the Jinjang police lockup.

Prior to the protest, Khalid emphasised that the arrest was in accordance with laws and the police will leave it to attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali and courts to make the decision.

"The PAA bans any street protests and the organisers should be ready to face stern action," he tweeted yesterday.

Later, during a press conference at the Parliament lobby, Johari, who is PKR whip, described the arrest as "unprofessional" and that Rafizi was treated as if he was a terrorist.

"We demand the IGP to release Pandan MP immediately as it is related to ethics," he added.

Meanwhile, Mahfuz said the arrest can be seen as forcing speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia to rule that the act of police was not inappropriate.

"And the (Prime Minister's Department) minister (Azalina Othman) was seen as placing herself above the speaker," he said.
