Some 1,000 demonstrators protested against the Dual Language Programme at Tasik Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur today.

The protest was organised by the anti-PPSMI movement and backed by PAS' Kongres Rakyat.

Also present was national laureate and DAP member A Samad Said, better known as Pak Samad.

The protest, which started at around 2pm, was initially supposed to take place at Dataran Merdeka but was changed two days before the planned demonstration as it clashed with another event.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man who was present said the protesters were not against the English language but opposed the DLP to defend the Malay language as the national language in the federal constitution.

He claimed that there may be opportunity for corruption in the rolling out of a new programme such as the DLP.

"Perhaps their agenda of pushing for the DLP is money. The rakyat don't want to be sacrificed with their financial agenda," he said.

Also present was Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali who accused Umno of failing to defend Malay interests and praised PAS for taking over the role.

Other PAS leaders present were PAS Ulama chief Mahfodz Mohamed, PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad, and PAS Youth deputy chief Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi.

This was the second protest after an initial protest on March 26 only attracted around 50 people.

Nonetheless, the turnout for today was still a far cry from the anti-PPSMI rally in 2009 which successfully forces the government to scrap the teaching of mathematics and science in English.

The government's new programme will allow schools the option to teach subjects in both the Malay and English languages.
